Anna Montanana appointed as new head coach of GB Senior Women

The BBF have announced the appointment of Anna Montanana as the new head coach of the GB Senior Women’s team.

The Spaniard replaces compatriot Chema Buceta at the helm of GB and becomes the first female head coach of the programme since 2006.

Montanana had an impressive playing career that included a stint in the WNBA with Minnesota Lynx, before moving into coaching upon retirement in 2015.

As well as coaching at the highest level in Spain with men and women, Montanana has been part of multiple medal-winning rosters with Spanish junior teams.

“I am truly honoured and excited to be appointed as the head coach of the Great Britain women’s national team,” said Montanana. “It is a great challenge to create a unique identity for the national team program while preparing them to compete at the highest level on the global stage.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the already exciting development of basketball in Great Britain, and I hope our team will continue to inspire the next generation of youth to excel on and off the court.”

GB captain Temi Fagbenle added: “Anna’s coaching and player resume is very impressive, but her character and passion for the often overlooked, yet crucial, intangibles of the game speak volumes.

“Having played, coached and succeeded at the highest levels, she knows what it takes to win against top competition. I am looking forward to working with her to actualise our team’s potential.”

Montanana will coach Spain’s Under-18s this summer to fulfil a previous commitment, while GB are next expected to be in action in November for the resumption of the EuroBasket Qualifiers.
