Luol Deng on First Time He Played Kobe Bryant & The Lesson He Learnt from Scott Skiles

In a 45 minute Q&A with campers at his annual Deng Top 50 Camp, Luol Deng was asked his favourite coaches to play for and one of those he discussed was Scott Skiles; his first coach in Chicago.

Sharing a story about the first time he played against Kobe Bryant during his rookie year, Kobe had some choice words for him before Luol ended up getting caught in the one-on-one match-up – going off for 17 points in the first quarter.

Watch the video to find out what happened next and the lesson he was taught from Skiles.

(For accuracy’s sake, we dug up the box score on Basketball Reference; Luol did indeed have 17 in the first quarter, but Kobe didn’t have 43, he actually finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists; but, the point of the story still stands!)
