The decision to host the June ties, against Belgium, Macedonia and Lithuania, at a single venue will disappoint many fans with GB women restricted once again to competitive appearances in the south of England, following a prior residence in Guildford.
But although it is understood finances are part of the logic, the governing body now faces a challenge to sell three games at the arena, which has the minimum 2000 seats required, and the court specifications demanded for international games under FIBA regulations.
“The team will have a challenging EuroBasket qualifying campaign, especially with three successive away fixtures, but through the selection of the new University Arena in Worcester, we are providing a great platform for the team to go out and perform in front of a capacity crowd on our home court,” Sinéad Gordon, British Basketball Head of Operations, said.
“In recent years we have enjoyed competing at Surrey and have had a great relationship with Surrey Sports Park but we are especially looking forward to be heading to the new 2000-seat Arena at Worcester, which is such a strong basketball area and of course boast current BBL franchise, Worcester Wolves.”
A head coach has yet to be confirmed for the women’s team with Damian Jennings ordered to re-apply for the post, despite leading the side to the brink of the quarter-finals at EuroBasket 2013.
No venues have yet been announced for GB Men’s qualifying ties with Iceland and Bosnia.
