Andrew Lawrence Comes Up Big as CofC Knock Off Boston College

Andrew Lawrence College of Charleston vs Boston CollegeGreat Britain point guard Andrew Lawrence came up big on Sunday, helping College of Charleston knock off Boston College 71-67 in the ESPN Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant at TD Arena.

Lawrence, who was still feeling the effects of a stomach virus that caused him to miss the game against Auburn the night before, scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a clutch three with a minute remaining to help seal the victory (watch it in the highlights below).

“I felt bad yesterday just because I missed the (Auburn) game. I was ready to get back out there today,” said the 6’1″ senior, who shot 5/8 from the floor and 10/12 at the line. “I was feeling weak throughout the game. I’m glad I was able to come through today and help the team get a win. It was a really big win for us to beat an ACC school, especially without Trent Wiedeman.”

It was the eighth all-time win for the Cougars over an ACC opponent and second on their home court in two years after upsetting then No. 9-ranked North Carolina in 2010 at TD Arena.

“That was a really hard-fought team win for us today,” said College of Charleston Head Coach Doug Wojcik after the game. “Sometimes there is a lot of pressure on kids and a lot of anticipation when you play in a tournament that we should just beat St. John’s and we should just beat Auburn without Andrew Lawrence.

“We haven’t practiced without Andrew and Trent (Wiedeman). There is no way to practice yesterday. They are tired and it’s a grind. Three games in four days. I really thought they answered the bell. I’m proud of all of them.

“Andrew just makes a huge difference for us. He really understands spacing and makes shots.”

Despite the win, College of Charleston finished seventh place in the ESPN Charleston Classic presented by Foster Grant. See how all the other Brits got on in NCAA Division 1 in our recap coming at the end of the week (see last week’s here).
