GB Women Fall to Australia

The Great Britain Women fell to Australia 87-63 on Saturday in Sheffield, in a match-up that will be repeated in GB’s opening game of the Olympics.

Despite keeping the game close in the first half, world number 2 Australia showed their might in the second, pulling away for a comfortable victory.

Azania Stewart, who scored 10 points and four rebounds for GB, was pleased with how hard the team worked against Australia.

GB Coach Tom Maher believes his side learned a great deal from the defeat.

“I think today was interesting and it was very good for us to play them. I think it was good for our players to understand the physicality, although it was not a rough game.

“We’re playing Australia, it’s not easy but we can take a lot out of it and hopefully we can do the country proud.”

Jo Leedham led GB with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, whilst Azania Stewart added 10 points.

The GB Women complete their three-day tournament tomorrow (Sunday) when they return to Ponds Forge to take on France (tip-off 5pm BST) for the runners up position as Australia secured the tournament today.

Box score.
