GB Women Open Up Sheffield with Victory Over Angola

Great Britain Women opened up the 2012 Game On Sheffield Tournament with a 74-57 victory over Angola on Friday afternoon in Sheffield.

Natalie Stafford led GB with a 14 point, 7 assist outing, whilst Jeneya Wade-Fray added 13, and Jo Leedham added 12. Nadir Manuel led Portugal with 11 points.

Despite the victory, the overwhelming feeling from the women’s camp was there is plenty to still work on. Head coach Tom Maher commented after the game:

“It was good and bad. We were not just playing against Angola to get the win, we’re playing to get respectable and do the best we can at the Olympics.

“When you play teams like that, you get a great chance to look at the video and educate yourself.

“We just want to be able to defend appropriately and if they beat us because they’ve got more talent, then ok, but if they beat us in another way, that’s not ok.

“We just want to make sure that we’re really good at the things we are good at.”

GB will look to improve their rebounding and defensive intensity on Saturday when they take on Australia at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena, at 5pm.

Box score.
