GB WON’T BACK DOWN FROM USA STARS

Kieron Achara says Great Britain shouldn’t be over-awed by the star-studded talent of the USA when they square off against the reigning Olympic champions in a friendly in Manchester on Thursday.

The Stirling-born forward admits that the Americans, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, will still be incredibly hard to handle despite losing a number of stars to injury ahead of London 2012.

And Achara, who has forced his way into coach Chris Finch’s regular rotation, admits he took heart from two victories over Portugal last weekend.

The Scot said: “It was a big step forward for us. We’ve had a few tough games over the last couple of weeks so to get two wins back to back, and find more consistency, that’s a promising sign for things to come.

“For us, confidence wise, we’re growing. We’ve become more of a team. There is a lot of individual talent but now we’re starting to gel more offensively and defensively and that’s a good thing when you’re facing the USA. We’re still a few more things to work on.”

Achara, who has yet to find a club for next season, believes the USA game will give Team GB a true reflection of what they will be up against once the Olympics begin.

He said: “I’m looking forward to facing the US in general, rather than any one player individually. But it’s an historic moment for British basketball. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
