GB Women’s Warm Up Tournament Announced
British Basketball have announced a four-day tournament as part of the GB Women’s preparations for Eurobasket 2011. The ‘British Basketball Invitational Tournament’ will take place from the 18-21st May 2011 at Surrey Sports Park Guildford.
The event will see the GB women face off against Germany, Latvia and Cuba.
Paul Blanchard, Surrey Sports Park Chief Executive, is pleased to be hosting the national side once again, he said:
“We are proud to be hosting the GB women here at Surrey Sports Park again for what we hope will be an exciting tournament of international basketball. We look forward to welcoming GB, Germany, Latvia and Cuba to our facilities and we can’t wait for the tournament to begin.”
Standard Life GB women’s head coach Tom Maher is looking forward to the competition his team will face in Surrey:
“I couldn’t be happier with the teams British Basketball has assembled to play in our tournament at Surrey Sports Park. Cuba is a traditional world basketball power and Latvia has a couple of players that are legitimate stars of the women’s game. Furthermore playing Germany gives us the opportunity to measure our progress from last year”.
The Game On 2011 tournament in Surrey will form part of the Standard Life GB women’s team’s preparations for EuroBasket Women 2011 which tips off in Poland on 16 June 2011. Last summer saw the women qualify top of their group in the EuroBasket qualifying rounds where they defeated Game On 2011 opponents, Germany, so they will be looking to do the same again when they return to Surrey.
