GB Under-20 Women’s Squad Announced

Head Coach Damian Jennings has named an initial squad of 22 for the GB Under-20 Women’s team in preparation for the Division A European Youth Championships this summer.

Training camp opens up on the 27th May in Leigh, before the squad will attend a combined camp with the yet-to-be-announced GB Under-20 men in Colchester from June 3rd.

Of the 22 players selected, 13 are bottom age players and will be experiencing a big step up when they attend the preparation programme.

The team is set to face Slovak Republic, Latvia and Spain when they compete in Group D of the Division A European Championships on 7 July 2011. This GB under-20 women’s team will be the first women’s youth team to play in the European Division A competition after gaining promotion last year.

Jennings commented:

“The preparation programme will be intense as we balance training and practice games against Division A standard teams.

“This year’s competition will rely upon good preparation once again and I believe we are well prepared and have a strong camp in place to do well in the European Championship later in the year.”

The GB under-20 women’s camp will also see the team play a three test-game series against France and strong European teams, Holland and Czech Republic.

Head of Performance at British Basketball, Warwick Cann said:

“The women achieved a lot last year when they were promoted through to Division A and stepping up to a new level is why everyone plays and coaches basketball. This step up will certainly help our current standards of playing and coaching overall.

“The competition this year for the under-20 women promises to be hard but I’m sure it will also prove to be rewarding in its own difficult way.”
