Pops Mensah-Bonsu – Tottenham’s Finest – Hoopsfix Podcast Ep.12

The Hoopsfix Podcast is back, and for Episode 12 we have a good one, as we got the chance to sit down with recently retired GB star Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Mensah-Bonsu, who most recently played for AEK Athens in Greece, hung up his boots last week after a 9 year pro career to don a shirt and tie as a Regional Representative for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Dialling in from Washington, Pops sat down with us for over an hour to speak on a wide range of topics including:

  • The sport he first excelled at, high jumping
  • How he went from playing on the JV team when he first got to the US to being recruited by a number of high major programmes
  • His memories of college at George Washington University and their two trips to the NCAA tournament
  • The pain of going undrafted in 2006
  • How he got the look with Dallas where he signed his first professional contract
  • Comparing his experiences with the NBA to Europe
  • Whether or not he thinks he reached his true potential
  • The impact his first coach, Joe White, had on him
  • How he feels about facing retirement
  • His new role with the NBPA, why he took it and what it involves
  • How his doping ban for prescribed medication came about and the fight to clear his name
  • His thoughts on where the GB programme is now
  • A final message to the fans who have followed him throughout his playing career
  • And much, much more!

There was so much we didn’t get the chance to go into, but hopefully, fingers crossed, we’ll have Pops back on in the future for a part 2!

As always, I’d love to get your feedback, come back after you’ve listened and lets get some discussion going in the comments.
