Great Britain Senior Women suffered a 62-61 loss at the hands of Germany on Sunday afternoon in Slovenia at Eurobasket.
Kristine Anigwe missed two crucial free throws with 19 seconds remaining that would have given GB the lead, and a last second three point attempt from Holly Winterburn would not convert to seal GB’s fate.
Although they led through the second quarter, a scoreless drought for the first eight minutes of the third – where GB only scored six points in the period, proved to be GB’s downfall.
Despite the loss, GB finished third in Group C and now advance to face Serbia on Tuesday for a spot in the quarter finals.
Temi Fagbenle led GB once again with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Anigwe had another double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as noone else reached double figures.
“I think we started well, improved from yesterday,” GB guard Georgia Gayle said.
“A big thing for us was moving the ball on offence and having patience and in the first half we had that. The third quarter is where we had our troubles and struggled to score and they were scoring and it just made it tough for us to bring it back towards the end.”
Leonie Fiebich led Germany with 13 points.
