VINCE MACAULAY AT MANCHESTER GIANTS HELM

Manchester Giants have named Vince Macaulay as head coach and General Manager.

The former London Lions coach, general manager and owner, replaces Lloyd Gardner who quit to join Surrey last month.

It’s been seven months since Macaulay was abruptly axed in London following his lengthy stint at a club where he was a a part-owner before its takeover by 777 Partners.

It is unclear whether he will have an ownership stake in Manchester where a number of directors have resigned in recent months amid questions over the financial stability of the franchise.

“I’m delighted to have this opportunity to restructure Giants and to coach them during the coming season,” he said.

“I’m so happy to be back in BBL basketball, as everyone knows it’s in my blood. I looked around and there’s only two black coaches in the league, so I’m happy to push that number up on our way to hopefully some wins.”

The Scouser led Lions to the BBL title in 2018/19, the BBL Trophy in 2020/21 and the BBL Cup in both 2007/8 and 2018/19. He is likely to have rebuild a roster from scratch with several departees already and GB captain Dan Clark understood to be in talks with another BBL team.

But Macaulay said: “The goal is to put a very competitive team together and build on last season’s success.

“I’m really looking forward to coaching at the National Basketball Performance Centre, it’s a great venue where they put basketball first and it’s in a city with a true basketball culture. A number of high-profile businesses in the city have already expressed an interest in getting behind us off the floor.

“I’m massively excited to get back to coaching and looking to build a great team who can bring success to the Giants.”
