LLOYD GARDNER MAKES MOVE TO SURREY SCORCHERS

Lloyd Gardner is Surrey Scorchers’ new head coach.

Less than 48 hours after MVP revealed he had emerged as top choice for the role, it has been confirmed that Gardner has ended his stay at Manchester Giants after less than 18 months to take over in Guildford.

Having taken Giants to their best-ever campaign since their revival, coming fifth in the British Basketball League and reaching the BBL Cup final, the Englishman succeeds Creon Raftopoulos at the Scorchers.

“My time in Manchester has been memorable,” Gardner said. “Thank you to the staff, players and fans for the support I received throughout my short time. I look forward to following the franchise move forward from the foundations we have established. At this moment I felt it was best for myself and my family to look for other opportunities.”

Surrey Sports Park managing director Gavin Baker added: “We are incredibly excited to bring Lloyd in to lead the Scorchers Franchise. He has proven himself in British Basketball achieving success with Manchester Giants last season and his work with young player development at Barking Abbey Basketball Academy.
“As our club grows, change is always going to be prevalent, and Lloyd will be a great asset for the future of the programme and the continued development of Surrey Scorchers both on and off the court”.

With David Ulph departing to join Cheshire Phoenix, the prospect of an off-season exodus in Manchester looms large.

But club executive Jamie Edwards said: “We’ll be looking to make a new appointment as soon as possible, recruitment is at an advanced stage, and we have a good structure with the assistant coaches Ploutos Vourliotis, Paul Cantwell and Tom Fletcher ID-ing and assessing talent. I’m confident we can make another step forward this coming season.”
