GARETH MURRAY EXTENDS GLASGOW ROCKS STINT
Glasgow Rocks boss Gareth Murray has agreed a new one-year deal at the club.
But he has given himself the option of calling it quits as a player in the summer to focus solely on coaching.
The 37-year-old from Arbroath will lead his side into this weekend’s BBL Playoff semi-final against Leicester with one part of his future resolved.
After finishing rock bottom last term with a minimal budget, the ex-Great Britain International guided the Rocks to seventh in the league and the last four of all three knockout competitions in his second term.
But he could hang up his boots after July’s Commonwealth Games or opt to continue his demanding dual role as player-coach. “I’m undecided if I’ll just be a player or just a coach,” he confirmed. “I’ve still not made that decision yet.”
Priority number one when the campaign is over will be to retain the nucleus of his squad, even if Murray appears resigned to losing American star Jordan Johnson who is keen to return to mainland Europe and a higher-profile league.
“Some guys would like to return,” Murray underlined. “It’s a difficult time when you’re trying to build your team again and you’re not really sure who is going to return.
“So you’re working with agents and the players you’ve had to see where they want to go and see if we can return as many guys as possible. But I’d definitely like to make the team stronger.”
