SERBIA WIN WOMEN’S EUROBASKET

Serbia are champions of the 2021 Women’s EuroBasket after overcoming France 63-54 in the final.

Head coach Marina Maljkovic’s team saved their best to last against a sub-par French in Valencia, behind Yvonne Anderson’s 18 points, while Jelena Brooks also made a huge contribution with 15 points and 5 rebounds.

Serbia – repeating their 2015 triumph – concluded the tournament on a flawless 6-0 record while France, who have now claimed a fifth silver medal in a row at FIBA Women’s EuroBasket were hit with a first loss when it mattered most.

After a torrid first half offensively when they trailed by double-digits, France looked to have hauled themselves back into the contest and established a foothold when they cut the gap to five points. However, Serbia regained control at the start of the second half as they came out with a stunning 12-2 run and never looked back.

Sonja Vasic led the champions in scoring, assists and rebounds in the tournament as she averaged 15.5 points, 7.2 boards and 4.2 assists per contest boards per contest.

She said: “We knew that if we controlled the game and did the small things then it would be one of our easier games of this tournament. Because we could relax and enjoy it, we were not under any pressure. Finally a lot of ourplayers were shining. It is a dream come true for this generation to finish the story like this.”

The Serbian small forward was voted MVP of the tournament and was joined on the All-Star Five by Endene Miyem of France, the Belgian duo of Emma Meesseman and Julie Allemand and Jonquel Jones of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Prior to the title game, Belgium defeated Belarus 77-69 behind a 21-point and 10-rebound double-double from Messeman to claim the bronze medal. This was the Belgian Cats’ second podium finish in competition history, after also finishing in third place in 2019.

Jones was the tournament’s top scorer, averaging 24.3 points per game and also leading the competition in rebounds, with 16.3 boards per contest.
