Great Britain Senior Women came up short against Germany and saw their EuroBasket campaign come to a close, falling to a 67-80 defeat in their last EuroBasket group stage game on Sunday evening.
The loss meant that GB are eliminated of the tournament as they needed to beat Germany by 11 to reach the knockout stage of the competition.
Germany had a strong start, holding GB to just eight points in the opening quarter (8-26). However, after trailing by 21 points Great Britain clawed their way back into the game cutting their deficit to just five points inside the third quarter. Nevertheless, Germany held them off and secured their spot to the EuroBasket quarterfinals.
“Well, we knew it was going to be a very tough game, because obviously Germany was playing at home”, said GB Head Coach Anna Montanana post-game press conference.
“The team fought in any way possible. Even with the score, I am very happy with the performance. Yes we have some mistakes in very important moment, but we came back into the game again and that is something that we have done every time we trailing. Proud of the team, proud of the way they have been fighting. The EuroBasket, for sure I wanted more, for sure I wanted a win, but overall after this year, everytime we are going out of a tournament we grew stronger.”
Holly Winterburn put in a top performance to lead GB with a game-high 18 points and six assists, while Savannah Wilkinson contributed for 17 points and eight rebounds. Temi Fagbenle added 11 points in the loss.
Frieda Buhner led Germany with 17 points.
