GIANTS TURN TO GARDNER

Lloyd Gardner is getting back in the BBL – at Manchester Giants.

14 months after his tenure with London City Royals was curtailed when the club imploded, the club confirmed on Monday that the Englishman has agreed a deal to take over as head coach of the strugglers until the end of the campaign.

Formerly an assistant with the Great Britain senior men’s team, Gardner won plaudits for his work during a decade at the Barking Abbey Academy before leaving the set-up for his brief spell at the soon-to-be doomed Royals.

Gardner said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to be the Head Coach of the Manchester Giants. In my opinion, the Giants are a club with storied tradition and I am excited to be a part of its potential for the future. I’m eager to get started together with the players and staff as we strive for a strong finish to end the season.”

He arrives at Giants a fortnight after the surprise sacking of Danny Byrne and with the side holding a 6-14 record following Sunday’s loss at Cheshire Phoenix, when Ploutos Vourliotis was in interim charge.

The hiring, say Giants, is until the end of the season “with a view to making it a long term appointment in the summer.”

“I’m delighted to make this appointment,” said Giants supremo Jamie Edwards.

“We’ve got a coach who comes highly recommended, he’s ambitious and is coming to Manchester to work with a talented group. Lloyd has a history of bringing through talent and that fits with what we want to achieve in Manchester long term.”
