Kristine Anigwe to wear Breonna Taylor’s name on jersey for WNBA season

Kristine Anigwe will wear Breonna Taylor’s name on her LA Sparks jersey as part of the WNBA players’ Justice Movement for the upcoming season.

The GB international is set to compete in her second season in the league having been acquired by the Sparks via trade from Dallas Wings following a previous trade from Connecticut Sun.

Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by police in her home in Louisville and players are keen to keep the spotlight on the social justice issue as basketball action returns following the coronavirus pandemic.

The WNBA have dedicated the season in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, while NBA players will have approved social messages on their jerseys such as ‘Say Their Names’, ‘Equality’, ‘Justice Now’, “Hear Us’, ‘Respect Us’ and ‘I Can’t Breathe’.

Anigwe made her GB Senior debut at the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers in Belgrade, Serbia after making the switch from representing USA at youth level – winning two World Championship gold medals at different age groups.

The delayed 2020 WNBA season gets underway this weekend with a triple-header including Anigwe’s Sparks in action against Phoenix Mercury with all games being held at IMG Academy in Florida.

Last season, the Sparks went 22-12 through the regular season – under five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher – before being swept by Connecticut Sun in the semi-finals of the post-season.
