Glasgow Rocks have sacked head coach Darryl Wood.
It is understood the Scot, in his first year in the role, was called on Tuesday morning and let go based on ‘performances and results’.
The surprise move, which caught Wood unawares and which one Rocks player described as “crazy”, came two days after the side exited the BBL Trophy in the semi-finals at the hands of London City Royals.
Wood was handed the job on a permanent basis last summer after taking interim charge when Tony Garbelotto abruptly parted company with the side almost exactly 12 months ago.
He had guided his team to last month’s BBL Cup final, where they lost to London Lions, but they currently sit ninth in the league.
Until losses in both legs to the Royals and an overtime reverse at Newcastle last Friday, Glasgow had won 13 out of their previous 15 games.
Rocks owner Duncan Smillie, who confirmed no successor has yet been lined up, said: “We part company on the best of terms, the commitment and professionalism demonstrated by Darryl in his time here as head coach and previously as assistant coach has been first class.
“We would like to thank him sincerely, at all times he has been a credit to himself and our organisation. On behalf of everyone at Glasgow Rocks we wish Darryl all the very best of luck in his future.
“We now enter the business end of the BBL season with 15 crucial games in March and April, we will announce our go forward strategy soon as we make our push for the play-offs.â€
Former Rocks number two Erik Olsen and ex-Cheshire coach Robbie Peers lead the list of possible replacements at the Emirates Arena.
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
