The BBC Sport are to broadcast a selection of live BBL games during the remainder of the 2018-19 season.
Starting with Friday’s game between Newcastle Eagles and Plymouth Raiders, BBC Sport will show one game per week via its website and app.
The British Basketball Cup Finals at Arena Birmingham on Sunday 27 January will also be shown live on the BBC’s digital platforms.
“We’re delighted to once again be a broadcast partner for the BBL, demonstrating our commitment to bring the best of British basketball to the widest possible audience. The league and cup competitions are fantastic showcases for the sport and the BBC’s fast-expanding live streaming service,” said Victoria Cotton, BBC Sport’s Live Streaming executive editor.
Last season, the BBL was screened on the BBC and Freesports but, despite talks with rivals including Channel 4, the league has been unable to get an extensive deal with production costs a crippling factor.
BBL Commercial Director Bob Hope added: “We are thrilled to be connecting with BBC Sport again, since it gives the sport and the BBL another great platform to showcase itself.
“We are aiming to build on the excellent coverage we have previously enjoyed and excited to be collaborating together once more.
“Meanwhile, it is extra special that the first game to be shown this season on BBC Sport will be a historic one as the Eagles play for the first time at their brand new state of the art arena.”
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
