HANDY PALMS OFF BELARUS STARLETS
Great Britain’s women dominated Belarus Under-20s in a 78-62 win in Minsk on Wednesday.
Chantelle Handy scored a game-high 18 points while Eilidh Simpson added 17 off the bench, including five three-pointers, as GB made it two victories out of three on their travels.
And Chema Buceta’s side never looked back after taking control in the first quarter with a 10-0 run, eventually leading by as much as 63-41 at the close of the third. (Game stats)
GB finish up the event with a second meeting with Belarus on Thursday.
Game 2: Monakana run
Great Britain’s women produced a late rally to beat Argentina 57-56 in Minsk on Tuesday.
Janice Monakana hit 12 points as GB came from ten down in the fourth quarter, Chantelle Handy draining a three-pointer that capped 13-0 run.
But after the Argentines had nudged ahead, Monakana was left to be the heroine, downing two decisive free-throws that proved the difference despite two late misses from the foul line.

Head Coach Chema Buceta told gbbasketball.com, “This was a very interesting game for us, to keep it going as a team. Argentina played very good defensively and forced us to find solutions to be able to score.”
“Of course we made mistakes, but mistakes are part of the show and we have to learn from them. In general, our defence was good and although winning wasn’t the main objective here, we were losing by 7 points with under 5 minutes to go and the team still believed they could win, having the self-confidence to do this.”
Buceta’s side are next set to face Belarus Under-20s on Wednesday.
Game 1: GB edged out by Belarus
Great Britain’s women were pipped 64-62 by Belarus in their opening friendly in Minsk on Monday.
In the opening game of a brief summer for Chema Buceta’s side, GB were out-scored 18-11 in the fourth quarter after threatening to upset the hosts who were without centre Yelena Leuchanka.
But despite 10 points and six rebounds off the bench from Azania Stewart, her score with 45 seconds left ended an attempt at a rally with the Londoner missing in the final seconds before a three-point attempt from Eilidh Simpson on the buzzer missed its target.
Katerina Snytina scored a game-high 28 points for Belarus.
