Great Britain’s women will take a squad of 12 to Spain for their final tune-ups ahead of EuroBasket.
Peter Buckle has left out a number of players for the trip to Bilbao, including Temi Fagbenle and Steph Gandy, which sees his squad face the reigning European champions on Thursday before meeting Canada and Poland on the two subsequent days – while potentially handing a debut to young Scottish forward Hannah Peacock.
Fagbenle has been given permission to attend her graduation at Harvard University and Gandy is nursing an ongoing injury.
“We have decided to continue Steph’s rehab with the team in Spain, even though she will not suit up because of her injury,†confirmed National Teams Director, Warwick Cann.
“It’s simply more effective for her rehab to be with our specialist Strength & Conditioning Coach and Physiotherapist. We made the same decision with Azania Stewart for France.
“Not only will Steph continue her rehab under our experts, but she will still be with the team listening, watching and learning from the coaching staff as we continue our EuroBasket Women preparation.”
In addition, Georgia Jones and Chantelle Pressley have been cut from the roster, which now stands at 15.
Squad: Dominique Allen (SBS Ostrava, CZE); Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott (University of Toledo, USA); Stef Collins (Cardiff Met Archers); Ella Clark (Zamarat, ESP); Temi Fagbenle (Harvard, USA); Stephanie Gandy (Sheffield Hatters); Chantelle Handy (Ormanspor, TUR); Nicole How (Sydney Uni Flames, AUS); Erin McGarrachan (Leicester Riders); Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby (Lafayette, USA); Hannah Peacock (City of Edinburgh Kool Kats); Eilidh Simpson (St Francis Brooklyn, USA); Azania Stewart (Pinkk Pesci 424, HUN); Rachael Vanderwal (Gernika Bizkaia, ESP)
We have a tiny favour to ask. In 2018 we set out to make Hoopsfix sustainable by building our relationship directly with our readers. Up until now, Hoopsfix has been creating editorials, videos and podcasts to provide sorely missing coverage of the British game and its distinct culture and community.
We have funded Hoopsfix with our freelance work creating basketball media, but sadly that means not only does it fall behind our client’s priorities, but some of those clients are the same organisations we need to report objectively on putting us in a conflicted position.
We want to devote more time to our mission of helping British basketball reach its potential, and produce even more content for the basketball community by making Hoopsfix a sustainable 100% independent business funded directly by our readers through Patreon.
If everyone who enjoys our content chose to support us, our future would be much more secure. For as little as $3 per month, you can support Hoopsfix – and it only takes a minute.
We are tremendously honoured and humbled to have a community of people who value what we do, and we look forward to being at the forefront of the British game as it continues to evolve.
