BUCS Premier – Week 2 Recap

The second week of BUCS action in the Premier divisions saw four teams continue their winning starts to the season.

Loughborough made it two wins out of two in the Premier North Division after avenging last season’s Championship Final defeat to the University of Worcester with an 82-75 victory on the road.

“It’s a good win on the road,” Loughborough’s Head Coach Mark Jarram said. “The guys played through some tough situations. We got it going in the second half, but Worcester wouldn’t go away and made a run at us late. I’m glad the guys got the experience closing out a game early in the season.”

Sheffield Hallam edged out Durham with an 80-79 success despite a 3-point barrage from Italian-American Sam Martin as George Brownell held his nerve to seal the win with two late free throws (full report here).

Meanwhile, Northumbria maintained their unbeaten start with a convincing 93-59 win against Leeds Beckett. Jack Thompson (pictured) top scored for the home side with a 30 point haul made up entirely from beyond the arc (!) while Newcastle Eagles duo Darius Defoe and Scott Martin added 14 points each. And Head Coach Marc Steutel was pleased with his side’s display.

“We had a very focused performance this week,” he said. “It was great to get a balanced scoring spread, with Jack Thompson putting on a great shooting display hitting 10/14 from the 3-point line. To have five players in double figures was a positive for us too and we are becoming more familiar with each other as a group.”

“We still have a long way to go, but the guys are happy with a solid performance.”

In the South, Brunel recorded their second victory with a 61-54 win on the road at Oxford. Mike Darlow and Benji Lawman top scored for the visitors with 18 points apiece while Prince Lartey had 12.

East London also kept their 100% start in tact after beating London South Bank 78-54 away from home. Will Ashby led five players in double figures with 14 points with Leigh Greenan and Matic Zupanc both adding 13 points each.

North: Loughborough, Northumbria (2-0); Worcester, Sheffield (1-1); Durham, Leeds (0-2)
South: East London, Brunel (2-0); Oxford, UCL (0-1); LSBU (0-2); Bath (0-0)
