England U16s Go Down 2-1 in Sweden Series

England Under-16s went down 2-1 in their three game series against Sweden this past weekend at Oaklands College St Albans.

In their opening game Friday they suffered a 61-58 loss, giving up a 14 point lead as they were outscored 29-14 in the final period. Carl Wheatle led England with 13 points, and Dominic Scott-Robinson and Sam Japhet Mathias adding 11 and 9 points respectively.

Head Coach Alan Keane’s side bounced back on Saturday, jumping out to a 13-2 lead to open the game and not looking back to secure a 56-42 victory with a 14 point, 10 rebound double double from Wheatle and Kemar Hawes adding 12.

Their final match-up on Sunday proved to be the closest of them all, with England coming out on the wrong side of a 64-62 result.

Thai Segwai-Lodge, who led England with 14 points, missed a potential game winning shot in the final seconds.
Luke Mitchell backed up Segwai-Lodge with 13 and Carl Wheatle added 12.

“Overall it was an excellent weekend in terms of preparation,” said Head Coach Keane. “For 3 days we overloaded the players mentality as well as physically. We definitely grew together and got better each day. Moments where we lacked concentration cost us in key time during the games.

“Luke Mitchell showed us once again great leadership qualities. He battled through injury throughout the weekend giving a MVP performance in game 3. New additions Nelson Boachie Yiadom, Jelani Watson-Gayle and the return of Dominic Scott-Robinson adds much more depth to the team. We have loads of work to do but we are where we need to be at this moment.”
