Worcester Wolves claimed the 2014 BBL Playoff title with a comfortable 90-78 final victory over Newcastle Eagles at Wembley Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Behind a 30 point, 9 assist, 6 rebounds and 4 steal performance from MVP Zaire Taylor, Worcester pulled off the double after winning the BBL Trophy in March when they defeated Glasgow.
Newcastle fell to their second consecutive play-off final loss, despite multiple come back attempts, after trailing by as many as 16 in just the opening quarter, and 20+ later in the game.
“Back in the summer when I signed all these guys, all we wanted to do was win. We said we wanted to win two things this year – and that’s what’s happened,” said Worcester Head Coach Paul James, talking to the BBC.
“We looked at Newcastle and felt we have to do something different. We went from man-to-man to zone-to-zone to throw them off, and the start proved that.”
The third quarter proved to be decisive as Worcester went on a 17-0 run to seal the deal, led by Taylor.
Darius Defoe led the Eagles scoring with 22 points while Taylor was supported in his efforts by 14 points each from Will Creekmore, Kalil Irving and Jamal Williams.
