Betty Codona Classic Day 1

The inaugural Betty Codona Classic tips off today, with all eight Division 1 teams battling it out to be crowned the first ever champions of the new knockout competition.

Day 1 at Nottingham Basketball Centre will see four games, all the quarter finals, take place with the winners advancing to the semi finals on Saturday. Win or go home.

12 noon: Loughborough v Northumbria
Loughborough became the first team to advance to the semi-finals, with a 74-62 win over Team Northumbria on Friday at midday.

Maaja Bratka had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Loughborough, with Amber Kirschbaum adding 11 and GB point guard Georgia Jones dishing 8 assists.

“I’m really pleased with our opening performance of the tournament,” said Head Coach Matt Harber after the game. “It’s not an easy situation playing this style of tournament just after the Christmas break, and we’ll need to get better each game if we are going to progress further.”

Katrin Hulme had 20 points to lead Northumbria with Leola Spotwood adding 18.

Loughborough will face the winner of Cardiff vs Barking Abbey on Saturday at 1pm.
