Devon van Oostrum & Jo Leedham Nominated for FIBA Europe Player of the Year Awards

Great Britain’s Devon van Oostrum and Jo Leedham have been nominated as candidates for the 2013 FIBA Europe Player of the Year awards in their respective categories.

The awards, now in their ninth year, recognise candidates for their impressive performances and/or special achievements at both club and international level.

Leedham, who is up for the Women’s Player of the Year, has been GB’s star player in recent years, none more so than in 2013 when she led the national team to their best ever finish at Eurobasket; a widely unexpected second round berth, averaging 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game on 43.2% shooting

The 25-year-old also provided consistency for EuroLeague Women bronze medallists, Bourges Basket, with 8.4 points a night.

Meanwhile, 2013 brought to an end a remarkable youth career for Van Oostrum, who has been one of the most committed players to British national team programmes in recent years, featuring in no less than six European youth championships.

He is up for the FIBA Europe Young Men’s Player Of The Year after rounding out his youth international duty with MVP honours at the U20 European Championship Division B with 26.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists a game, and leading GB to Division A promotion.

Later in the summer, the 20-year-old was remarkably appearing at his second EuroBasket, at times showing flashes of the world of potential he holds at the point guard spot for GB in the future. The guard is now focusing on working his way into the regular rotation at Spanish club Laboral Kutxa.
