Maher Names Final GB Women’s Roster

Head Coach Tom Maher has named the final GB Senior Women’s 12 player roster that will compete in Eurobasket Women 2011, tipping off this Saturday 18 June in Poland.

The squad is led by Jo Leedham, who has been battling injury for 6 months but returned to action last week for GB, missing all but two of their warm-up games. The final roster is as follows:

GB Women’s Final Eurobasket Roster

Rose Anderson (University Central Oklahoma, Edmond, USA)
Kim Butler (Palacio De Congresos De Ibiza, Spain)
Kate Butters (UWIC Archers, UK)
Stef Collins (UWIC Archers, UK)
Chantelle Handy (MBK Ruzomb, Slovakia)
Jo Leedham (Unattached)
Ros Mason (Solna Vikings, Sweden)
Julie Page (Unattached)
Natalie Stafford (Sydney Flames, Australia)
Azania Stewart (Florida University, USA)
Lauren Thomas-Johnson (Gran Canaria, La Caja De Canarias, Spain)
Rachel Vanderwall (University of Limerick, Ireland)

Standard Life GB head coach, Tom Maher is pleased with his final squad:

“We have a good hardworking group, a mixture of experienced players with new up and coming talent.  We have kept a core of the squad from last year which provides consistency and a platform for continued development.”

Since the squad first assembled at Surrey Sports Park on 1 May for camp they have endured a busy schedule which has seen them play nine test-games.

Maher continued:

“It has been a good mixture of training and preparation games.  Playing games against A level teams has been a step progression and has given the team challenges they are likely to face in EuroBasket.

“We feel confident in the work that has been put in over the last six weeks.  Our preparation has been key. We have a challenging pool group and we need to ensure as individuals and as a team that we do our best.”

Before heading to Poland the Standard Life GB team will face Slovakia away on Wednesday 15 June when they will hope to avenge last week’s 54-65 loss in Latvia.

The women were drawn in Group B for this year’s Eurobasket and are set to face Belarus (18 June), Czech Republic (19 June), and Israel (20 June) in the first round.
