WHYTE MOVE FOR LEICESTER
Leicester Riders have signed 6’7†swingman James Whyte, and hope to have him available to face Worcester Wolves on Saturday.
The ex-Sheffield Sharks star can play either the off guard or small forward position, and will give Riders a lot more options on offence, as well as taking some of the heavy work load carried by J R Blount and Ryan Zamroz in the Leicester backcourt.
Most recently, the American played for Angers Basket in France, and Riders are awaiting clearance from the French Federation.
Whyte is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and played at rivals Sheffield for two seasons. In fact, he played for Sheffield in the epic playoff game, won by Riders at the John Sandford in April 2009, with a stunning 3 pointer by the Rider’s Bradd Wierzbicki on the buzzer. In that season Whyte averaged 15 points and 4 rebounds a game for the Sharks, shooting a very respectable 36% behind the arc.
Leicester coach Rob Paternostro said: “James is an experienced player, and with a lot of versatility, since he can play a number of positions. He is going to give us a lot of options and be a big help in the second half of the season.â€
Whyte is also a Bosman player, meaning he does not require a visa, and counts as a European players in the Riders squad.
Meanwhile the Riders have released James Warwick, who has signed with EBL Division One Club Manchester Magic. Warwick appearances for the Riders were seriously curtailed by injury, and the player is hopeful of rebuilding his career there.
