HEATING UP. GUILDFORD SIGN DUO

Guildford Heat has signed American point guard David Schneider out of William & Mary College and centre James Porter from North Carolina A&T.

Schneider, a 23-year-old rookie, scored 21 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1 steal against North Carolina in the final game of his senior season. And the newcomer, who will be entrusted with the playmaker’s new Heat head coach, Creon Raftopoulos, revealed that he is following in a family tradition.

“My grandfather, father and older brother all played for their colleges and I started playing basketball as soon as I learned to walk,” said Schneider.

“I have always been passionate about the sport and feel privileged to be able to play at a professional level. As a high scoring point guard, who can also rebound, I feel I have a lot to offer to the Heat.”

He will be joined by 6’10” centre Porter who joins from the Aggies where he developed a reputation for grabbing offensive rebounds and being a tough inside player with strong defensive skills.

“We have some big scorers in our team and James has the skills I was looking for to balance the squad,” said Raftopoulos. “He is a hard-nosed centre, who has demonstrated excellence in defence, blocked shots and rebounds. He is a great passer, too, with an incredible 7’ 5’’ wingspan. I have no doubt that he will be a huge asset to the team.”

Leicester capture Bennett

Leicester Riders have signed Coventry-born centre Andrew Bennett. The 6’10” rookie has just finished his collegiate career at North Georgia University, where he averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game last season.

“Andrew is very strong and very athletic and has shown the ability to be effective in the paint on both ends of the floor,” said Riders coach Rob Paternostro.

“When looking at his college career it is a credit to him that he has got better every year.

“Andrew has a range of skills and a ton of potential.  I am looking forward to helping him develop as a professional. He fits in very well to the roster we have assembled, it’s a great opportunity for him to begin his career.”

Big Z back in Worthing

Worthing Thunder have re-signed Evaldas Zabas. The Lithuanian joined Thunder from Worcester Wolves last season and averaged 15 points per game in his 21 appearances for the club.

“I am really excited about the deal and am looking forward to playing for Worthing again,” he said.
