England U16 Women Fall Short Against Israel

The England U16 Women’s team fell victim to a second half come back from Israel yesterday, losing 49-47.

Coach Karen Burton’s team opened up the game with a great run, led by Janice Monakana, on her way to 11 points and 10 rebounds. England had opened up a 29-16 lead by halftime.

Down by 15 points in the third quarter, Israel began to attack the deficit created in the first half, managing to get back to within five points of England by the start of the fourth quarter.

The Israeli team did not stop there, continuing on to take the lead with just one minute remaining in the game. England tied the game briefly before Israel’s May Dayan put her team up by two from the line. With four seconds left on the clock, Coach Burton’s team had one last chance to tie the game but failed to convert the play, meaning Israel took the win, 49-47.

Janice Monakana led England in points, rebounds and steals with 11, 10 and three whilst Israel’s Nadar Levi was the only Israeli player in double figures with, a game high 17 points. Full box score and play by play available here.

Yesterday’s loss means that England drop to fourth place in Group F, they will now go on to face undefeated Germany with hopes of getting a win and moving up their qualification group.
