Holly Winterburn will play overseas for the first time in her professional career next season after her move to Besiktas was confirmed.
The GB guard played a vital role in securing a historic European title for London Lions as they defeated her new side in the Finals.
Winterburn won 12 pieces of silverware in three seasons in total with the Lions, and is the most decorated player in the history of the WBBL with 14 titles – also winning three as a teenager with Leicester Riders.
The 23-year-old links up with American Dana Evans and Croatian Nika Muhl in the Besiktas backcourt next season with the chance to further cement her rising status as one of Europe’s top guards.
Winterburn averaged 11.0 points and 4.5 assists per game across 16 EuroCup appearances last season, and could end up playing EuroLeague for the first time, depending on Besiktas’ status.
The departure from London comes in the midst of the cut in funding to the women’s team – despite their European triumph – with the majority of the team expected to follow suit.
Temi Fagbenle left early to link up with WNBA side Indiana Fever, and is reportedly set to join Winterburn at Besiktas next season, while Abby Meyers has joined Israeli side Maccabi Ashnod.
