Amari Williams named CAA Defensive Player of Year for record third time

Amari Williams was named the Coastal Athletic Association’s Defensive Player of the Year for a record third time.

Williams was also named to the CAA’s First Team for the second straight season in a vote by the league’s coaches.

The former Mansfield Giants and Myerscough big man was a big reason the Dragons finished second in the CAA this year.

The senior from Nottingham led the CAA in blocked shots for the third straight season averaging 1.81 per game.

Williams averaged 12.3 points per game and 7.8 rebounds this season, which was fifth in the league.

He enters play this weekend fifth all-time at Drexel with 185 blocked shots and is now 13th on Drexel’s career rebounding list with 726.

He became just the 40th Drexel player to score 1,000 career points earlier this season and is now 34th on the school’s career scoring list with 1,076 points.

Drexel will begin play in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals on Sunday evening in Washington, D.C. The Dragons will be the second seed after finishing the regular season with a 13-5 CAA record, and await to find out if they will play against either Northeastern or Stony Brook .
