BBL Week 2 headlines: Dominant Lions move to 3-0, Riders rally for first win

The reigning BBL champions London Lions are sending out an early message to the rest of the league as they enjoyed a dominant weekend to continue their unbeaten start.

Three teams are still yet to taste defeat after the second week of the 2023-24 campaign.

Leaders Lions dominant on Sky Sports

In an early clash of last season’s trophy winners, London Lions enjoyed an emphatic 93-65 victory over Caledonia Gladiators in front of the Sky cameras. Gabe Olaseni posted 14 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes as his side were up 24 at half-time and never looked back – shooting at 57% inside the arc on the night.

London then backed up that performance by defeating Manchester Giants 76-115 on the road two days later behind Luke Nelson’s team-high 18 points and seven assists. The visitors sunk 16 three-pointers in the win and outscored their opponents 65-41 in the middle periods.

Riders turn it around for first win

Leicester Riders needed a 29-16 fourth quarter to see off Plymouth City Patriots for their first win of the season, 88-81. The visitors poured in 35 points in the second period to lead by as many as 11 before running out of steam late on.

The Patriots had 20 points apiece from Mason Faulkner and TJ Attwood, but only seven points from the bench in comparison to 30 for the Riders along with four starters in double figures.

Eagles beat Flyers on the road

Newcastle are the only other unbeaten side remaining after they doubled their win tally by beating Bristol Flyers 74-81 on the road. The visitors were down by eight heading into the fourth, but outscored Bristol 30-15 in the fourth to take the win with Jordan Johnson pouring in 26 points.

The other game this weekend saw Sheffield Sharks pick up their first win as they edged out Cheshire Phoenix 70-75 away from home. Jalon Pipkins top scored with 24 points as the Sharks made a fast start to lead by 14 after the first quarter.
