London Lions bowed out of the Basketball Champions League on Tuesday afternoon, and here is how social media reacted to their European debut.
The British basketball community rallied around the Lions in the build-up to their historic venture with support across the league, too..
🇬🇧📺 Good luck to @London_Lions representing #BritishBasketball & @BBLofficial in the @BasketballCL this afternoon… you can tune in to watch it here 👇 https://t.co/pdASDxLL8r

Best of luck to @London_Lions in their @BasketballCL qualifier this afternoon!

Good luck to former Scorcher @MBALIVE11 and the @London_Lions squad as they begin their European quest tomorrow!
Show them exactly what British Basketball is about 😤#OneGoal🇬🇧 pic.twitter.com/4RNA9M0vxE

The game went down to the wire and the Lions had the chance to tie the game with a contentious ‘no-call’ going against them in the final 10 seconds..
— Myles Hesson (@myleshesson) September 22, 2020
No foul on @MBALIVE11 ?!?! Very disappointed with how that finished! Fellas played their hearts out but we got unlucky with a missed call! @London_Lions great job men!! Keep progressing British Basketball!!!
— Ben Lawson (@StretchLawson) September 22, 2020
And once again, refs have completely mocked it, that’s a foul 1000%. Nonsense no call

Ahh so close!! Unlucky @London_Lions

Newcastle Eagles veteran, and co-host of ‘The BBL Show’ Drew Lasker gave his thoughts after the final buzzer:
My initial thoughts! A golden opportunity for the @London_Lions but it’s safe to say they waved the 🏴 Flag and represented us well! #TheBBLShow pic.twitter.com/3IdfuqE3wd

Rob Scott – formerly of EuroLeague Adventures – had a different look at how the Lions’ final possession went down..
Why would you send the ball into MBA in the post in that situation? Attack from the perimeter, make the defense, rotate, make a decision, probably force a foul anyway, just idiotic play calling….
— Rob Scott (@robscott33) September 22, 2020
As is standard, the comments section on Instagram was split, though GB legend Pops Mensah-Bonsu and current GB senior Ovie Soko both had their say.
Really proud of @London_Lions, we'll learn from this, first European game and lack of experience at times showed through. Particularly in the first half Neptunas showed they knew what to do to get the could called & that hurt us.
— Saintpat (@saintpat1962) September 22, 2020
Tough loss for the @London_Lions in the @BasketballCL, and they almost closed it out to advance
Lots of progress though for British Basketball, and we get to see them compete in the FIBA Europe Cup 🏀🇬🇧 pic.twitter.com/Il0CflHzFr

For a team as stacked as much as the London Lions. They’re not playing as well as I expected
— Jordan Clarke 📸 (@SnapsByJordan) September 22, 2020
Well done @London_Lions… You made us proud…
— Dolly (@dollygreig) September 22, 2020
Really enjoyed the game.. It nice to watch basketball that's not one pass and shoot.. Lions played well @MBALIVE11 was fouled on that last play
— Luke Freer (@lukefreer10) September 22, 2020
Captain Joe Ikhinmwin brought the energy on the court and felt the energy from the support, too:
The support today for me & @London_Lions was unreal: Truly appreciated, that's the energy that can drive #BritishBasketball forward.

And, there was also some love for the new Nike jerseys worn by the Lions:
Nice touch on the new @London_Lions' @nikelondon kits ✊ pic.twitter.com/uPgzZudZSr
— Hoopsfix 🇬🇧🏀 (@Hoopsfix) September 22, 2020
Love the BLM fists on the back of the @London_Lions BCL jerseys. Great touch.
— Huw Hopkins (@coach_huw) September 22, 2020
They need to make this new Nike stuff available to purchase. That jersey with the LDN and the monochrome would be hugely popular.
