Anglia Ruskin hold off Nottingham Trent for Women’s National Cup title

Anglia Ruskin University picked up the Women’s National Cup with a 90-80 victory over Nottingham Trent University on Sunday at Essex Sport Arena.

Holding a 20-point lead before the halftime break, Anglia Ruskin looked to be heading to a blowout win before a second half rally led by Nottingham Trent’s Arielle Jackson that saw them get it back to single digits before falling to defeat.

America Madeline Homoly picked up MVP honours with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists on 13-of-16 shooting, whilst Katrin Hulme had a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double and Noa Sanchez Marques finished with 16 points.

“Really pleased to get over the line,” ARU Head Coach Michael Hanson-Morris said. “We made hard work of it down the stretch, but it was one of our aims this season coming into the season to compete in the National Cup and try and win it, and we’ve done it first time of asking and we’re really delighted to come out on top.”

The reigning Division 1 playoff champions looked comfortable for the second half, as they added another trophy to their cabinet.

“It was a great game,” Homoly added.” We had a ton of energy, a lot of grit this game. We locked it down on defence and executed our game plan really well, it was just a fun game to be a part of.”

Jackson finished with a game-high 30 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals for NTU, with Victoria Gray adding 16 and 10 rebounds.

Box score.
