England & Scotland Confirmed Participants at 2018 Commonwealth Games

England and Scotland’s Senior Men’s sides could be going head-to-head next summer after both nations were awarded places to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Basketball makes a return to the competition schedule for the first time since 2006 with the two home nations part of the eight-team field.

“We are excited to have Basketball featuring on the Commonwealth Games programme for only the second time in history and to have several nations making their debuts is certainly going to add to the occasion,” said GOLDOC Chairman, Peter Beattie.

In 2006 in Melbourne, England earned a bronze medal after beating Nigeria 80-57 in the third place playoff having lost to hosts, Australia in the semi-finals.

Scotland stepped up their preparations this summer with GB internationals Kieron Achara, Gareth Murray and Ali Fraser part of their squad in the Celtic Clash tournament, where they defeated both Ireland and Wales.

Meanwhile, Hoopsfix understands preliminary invites have been sent out to players for England, but there are widespread concerns that preparation is drastically behind schedule. Additionally, the funding Basketball England has been allocated for the competition is considerably less than the National Governing Body expected.

Split into two pools of four, nations will face off against teams in their pool during the preliminary rounds held in Townsville and Cairns between 5-10 April. The finals will then be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13-15 April.

The pools and game schedules for the basketball preliminaries will be announced in the coming weeks.
