FAB IN NEW YEARS HONOUR

Newcastle Eagles player-coach Fabulous Flournoy has been awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

The New York-born guard, who has long held UK citizenship, was recognised for services to basketball and to the community in the north east of England.

Flournoy, now aged 43, has turned the Eagles into the dominant force in the BBL since taking over as coachÂ on Tyneside in 2003, racking up more league titles than any other club over the past decade.

He also won 16 caps for England, including a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

â€œOn behalf of the club and everyone connected with the Eagles, I want to congratulate Fab on receiving this honour and for everything he has achieved on his journey so far,â€ stated Eagles managing director Paul Blake.

â€œFabâ€™s life story serves as an inspiration to us all. He has had a major impact in the North-East community, both on and off the court for many years now.

â€œWe are all very proud of him and know he is truly deserving of this recognition.â€

Meanwhile BBL Chief Operating Officer, Andy Webb echoed the sentiment.

â€œFabâ€™s record speaks for itself in terms of delivering success,” he said. â€œI think everyone recognises that the combination of his life experiences, personality and work ethic have turned him into a role model and put him on the path to receiving this distinguished honour.”
