Great Britain U20 Women Roll Over Romania to Fight for Fifth

Great Britain are eyeing up fifth place heading into the last day of the FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship Division B 2016 in Podgorica after they registered an eye-catching 62-42 triumph against Romania.

Having played their opponents twice during preparation, Great Britain made it three wins against them and were always on top right from the tip-off. Eight early points from reigning Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) Young Player of the Year, Georgia Gayle set the tone and fuelled a commanding 21-9 lead at the end of the first period.

With the GB defence not relenting, they restricted Romania to the same tally during the second quarter and as Savannah Wilkinson stepped things up at the other end of the floor, it was a comfortable 41-18 lead at the break.

While Romania briefly threatened a revival attempt, the prospect was quickly choked off –  helped by some excellent work on the glass by Abigail Johnson,  who finished with 11 rebounds as GB strolled to victory. Her Barking Abbey Crusaders’ team-mate Wilkinson eventually corralled a team-high 16 points.

GB’s last game will take place against either Montenegro or Croatia (who play tonight) and is currently scheduled for 2.30pm tomorrow, but this is subject to change by FIBA.
