GB Senior Men Handed Favourable EuroBasket 2017 Qualifiers Draw

GB Senior Men have been handed a favourable draw in their bid to qualify for EuroBasket 2017.

Joe Prunty’s side have been drawn in Group G alongside Macedonia, Hungary and Luxembourg with the games taking place from 31 August – 17 September.

GB reached three consecutive EuroBasket tournaments from 2009-13, but then failed to qualify for last year’s major tournament after losing home and away to Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland.

According to the FIBA rankings, GB are ahead of their three opponents in 24th, although Macedonia were amongst the top seeds and will be considered favourites for the group.

GB managed to avoid the likes of powerhouses Germany, Russia and Slovenia, but are by no means facing a straightforward journey to next year’s event hosted in Romania, Finland, Israel and Turkey.

The strength of GB’s chances of making another Final Round will be down to the squad they will be able to put together having suffered from a number of notable absentees in recent years.

Meanwhile, GB U20’s will take on hosts Greece along with the Netherlands, Ireland, Kosovo and Albania in Group C of the European Championships Division B tournament, taking place in Haldika from 15-24 July.

Douglas Leichner will not be leading the quest to return to Division A after GB announced they are on the lookout for a new Head Coach, ending the three-year reign of the American.
