PHILIPPINES COURT FIBA FANS
The Philippines have promised to deliver an “outstanding fan experience†as part of their bid to land the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
With the hosts due to be announced in Tokyo on 7 August, the long-time frontrunners have ramped up their quest to see off rivals China – and stage the championships for the first time since 1978 – by unveiling a package which organisers say would be “a truly game changing event for FIBA and the sport worldwide.â€
Their offering is based around six arenas, including the 55000-capacity Philippine Arena in Bulacan, for what would be a 32-nation event.
“While there is still much work ahead for the final weeks of the bid campaign, we are hugely excited by the opportunities the Philippines 2019 bid offers our country and, vitally, the sport of basketball around the world,†said Manuel V. Pangilinan, President of the Basketball Federation of the Philippines. “We believe we are presenting FIBA with a passionate, innovative and game changing vision from a country on the move
“In the Philippines, basketball is life. It is part of our cultural fabric and the number one sport which people throughout our country follow devotedly every day. The opportunity to receive the honour of hosting the FIBA World Cup would provoke extraordinary national pride – an energy that would be felt and talked about right across the globe.â€
China has put forward an eight-venue package in attempt to win the host race after losing out to Spain for the 2014 World Cup.
