Will Saunders has been named to the All-Big South second team after helping Charleston Southern to a share of the regular season title.
The senior forward averaged 14.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 18 conference games, making 64 3-pointers with a 46% shooting accuracy. His team-mate and the other half of the Buccaneers’ deadly 3-point shooting duo, Saah Nimley claimed the Big South Player of the Year award.
CSU defeated High Point in a triple-overtime classic to ensure the two teams shared the league title with equal 13-5 records, although the Bucs head into the Conference tournament as the number 1 seeds courtesy of holding the tie-breaker.
Saunders enjoyed a rare start – just his second of his senior campaign – having done so well in his role off the bench all season, and contributed a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in an astonishing 54 minutes of action in the crucial final game.
A career-high effort of 26 points came on 6-8 shooting from beyond the arc in a win at Campbell last month, while Saunders also shot the lights out with 7-10 from 3-point range for a 22-point haul at the start of 2015.
Saunders and CSU go in search of a place in the NCAA Tournament as they await the winner of Longwood and Presbyterian in the Big South Conference quarter-finals.
