Northumbria Claim BUCS Title with Win Over Durham

Northumbria University Women ended a seven year drought as they defeated University of Durham, 50-45, for their second BUCS National title.

Led by captain and MVP Diana Voynova, who finished with 15 points, Northumbria stifled every Durham run, despite losing key player Kat Hulme 10 minutes before tip to a knee injury.

“It wasn’t the most entertaining of games,” said Northumbria Head Coach Josh Merrington. “I thought it was a very workman-like performance from us.

“We lost a key player just ten minutes before tip so that really shortened the rotation, our offence wasn’t pretty, people were playing out of position but defensively we really dug in, keeping a good team like Durham to 45 points is a testament to the girls commitment to defence.

“And really all season long that’s what has brought our success, and our players really buying into that philosophy. It was really an example of offence win games but defence wins championships, I know it’s very cliche, but it’s a perfect example.”
