GB WOMEN, JUNIORS LEARN EURO FOES

Great Britain v FranceGreat Britain were handed a reasonably favourable path through next summer’s qualifiers for EuroBasket Women 2015 when the draw was made on Sunday.

Damian Jennings’ side, the top-seeeded team in Group B, will meet Lithuania, Belgium and Macedonia on a home and away basis, with two spots up for grabs at the finals in Hungary-Romania the following year.

It was confirmed the qualification round will be played in June 2014, with the game dates on the 8th, 11th, 15th, 18th, 22nd and 25th June.

And even with the level of funding set to impact on the preparations for the series, GB should approach it with confidence after their second round run in 2013.

“It is critical that we maintain the momentum we have established this year in France and continue to build towards EBW 2015 and Rio 2016,” British Basketball National Teams Director, Warwick Cann said.

“We have been drawn in a group where we have had great rivalries in the past few years. There are no easy games in Europe and we will take each one at a time. I am confident with the right coaching staff, preparation and player commitment we can advance through to EuroBasket 2015 in Hungary and Romania.”

Group A will see Poland, finalists of the 1st Qualification Round, go up against Slovenia, Luxembourg and the Slovak Republic.

EuroBasket Women 2013 quarter-finalists Italy will take on Latvia, Estonia and Portugal in Group C.

While Montenegro are joined by Ukraine, Germany and Finland in Group D.

2011 European champions Russia – who were second seeds – were drawn in three-team Group E, together with Sweden and the Netherlands. Croatia, Bulgaria and Israel will play in Group F, the second group of three teams.

Great Britain’s men will have to wait until February to learn their 2014 opponents after FIBA’s decision to delay the award of their World Cup wildcards until their next executive meeting.

The Under-2o and youth championships draw also took place on Sunday for Great Britain, as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
