SURREY CAN RISE: MAJEWSKI
Surrey United’s head-coach Jack Majewski was pleased with his side’s performance against Durham and believes his current crop of players are capable of improvement without adding any imports.
Americans Kevin Fleming and George Williams signed last month subject to obtaining work-permits and are still waiting, leaving the side short-handed once more headed into this Saturday’s visit to champions Leicester.
However, speaking after his side’s 100-79 defeat to the Wildcats, Majewski said: “We have a great group of guys and we are already showing huge signs of improvement and we can get better with this squad, even without Americans.”
“We’re maybe one good signing away- not necessarily an American because one of our main weaknesses was inside but we fixed that.”
Majewski added 6’8″ Ceslovas Kucinskas last week week and the Lithanian made an instant impact with a 24 point debut, imposing a physical presence inside and showing his capability to step outside and drain a three.
“We had a weakness inside but the arrival of Ces was important. He can score and rebound and gives us good balance but it’s not just about what he can do. We looked so much better with him in the side.”
The 47 year-old play-caller disregarded his side’s opening game defeat against Worcester and believes he saw immediate signs of improvement against Glasgow.
“The Worcester game was terrible. I don’t know what happened but we were playing netball, we were completely overwhelmed by the situation. In Scotland, there were good signs for us and today (Sunday) was a continuation of what we did in Scotland.
“21 points looks big but it’s not to us. Durham are a good team, they beat London Lions and did not lose by much against Newcastle so we did well and it shows we are getting there.”
Majewski’s opposite number Lee Davie, head-coach of the Wildcats agreed: “Surrey kept going like we knew they would and their big guy (Kucinskas) helped them a lot. I’m sure they have a few wins around the corner.
Youngsters Elvisi Dusha and Andy Tamayo impressed against Durham and Majewski believes his young side will continue to get better in their current environment.
“We have a lot of guys who are 19 and this is exactly what they need. This is good exposure, sometimes they make stupid mistakes but they are learning. Age is not an excuse for us and giving up is something that is not in our vocabulary.”
Majewski’s United side face a tough double-header next as they travel to the defending champions Leicester on Saturday before hosting the in-form Plymouth Raiders on Sunday.
