WOLVES, LEICESTER RIDING HIGH
Worcester Wolves continued their perfect start to the league whilst progressing to the quarter-finals of the BBL Cup along with Plymouth and Durham. Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, Birmingham and Surrey’s struggles continued with further defeats.
Paul James’ side’s first task was to deal with the visit of Manchester in the first round of the Cup and Alex Owumi’s first half blitz from downtown helped them on their way to an 88-66 success. Will Creekmore top scored with 24 points, collecting yet another double-double by adding 12 rebounds. Sunday, they went 5-0 in the league with an emphatic 100-59 victory in Birmingham over the Knights paced by new signing Andreas Schreiber’s 18 points.
Birmingham were without their key man Brent Benson while fellow American Armond Battle picked up an injury, having made his debut the day before in their cup defeat to Plymouth. Donald Robinson led the way for the Raiders with 26 points in a 103-72 win on the road. It was to be a double-winning weekend for the Devon based side as they continued their winning streak with a comfortable 97-63 win over Surrey with Trevor Setty, Matt Pressey and Robinson combining for 62 points.
As for Surrey, the defeat was an improvement on their performance the day before after being handed a 107-38 thrashing by the defending champions Leicester. Connor Washington had a game-high 16 points for the Riders as one of six players to register double figures.
Leicester’s win moved them to third in the league behind Newcastle, who improved to a 5-1 record on Friday night after using a strong fourth quarter as a platform to defeat Glasgow 98-70. Â The game was the third to be broadcast on BBL TV and saw Daniel Northern post a 17-17 double-double for the Rocks while Charles Smith led all scorers with 24 points.
The final cup game of the weekend saw Durham come from behind to defeat Cheshire 78-75 despite a 25 point haul from Reggie Middleton and an 18-12 double-double from debutant Victor Moses. Danny Huffor’s 17 points helped the Wildcats overturn an 11 point half-time deficit and set up a quarter-final clash with Sheffield or London, who play their first round clash in November.
