DUSHA OUT TO MAKE A POINT

BBL LOGO 568Rising star Elvisi Dusha aims to prove himself in the BBL and is eager to take on his ‘biggest challenge yet’ with Surrey United.

The 19 year-old’s motivation will be the disappointment of missing out on the GB under-20’s final 12-man squad over the summer after a late cut.

“I was really gutted!” Dusha admitted.

“I was greatful to get that far and play with great players like Devon (van Oostrum), Nick (Lewis) and Joe Hart but I was disappointed not to make it”

The 6’2″ point guard is hoping the exposure of playing in the BBL will boost his chances of competing at next year’s Under-20 European Championships and he can expect a leading role with Surrey this season.

“I have one year left (of eligibility) and I really want to make it next year. The BBL is a good opportunity for me to play against other top point guards and I’ll be able to improve”

He added: “This is a big test for me, I’m glad I have this chance and it will take time for me to adapt but I think I can step up to the challenge. My role will be to give the team more control and be a leader on the court.”

Dusha has spent the last few seasons playing for London United-Harefield Academy in the EBL under Surrey’s new coach Jack Majewski and the 19 year-old believes this will help smooth the transition into the BBL.

“It’s very good to have the same coach, we have a great bond on and off the court and it makes me feel more comfortable. I don’t have to impress a new coach and I know what Jack (Majewski) wants me to do and what style of basketball to play”

Surrey have so far confirmed the signings of Americans Kevin Fleming and George Williams – subject to work permits – Lithuanian Ignas Å ijanas as well as Dusha’s former team-mate Andy Tamayo with more set to follow from the Division 2 side.

“We’ve got a good squad, we’re young and we get on well together because some of us have been together the past few years”

Dusha is aware of the negative things being said about the club but is confident Surrey can be a threat this season despite their lack of experience.

“We’re a young squad but we’re hungry to succeed. We’re not going to win the league but we’re not going to be the worst team either! The club is making expansions and is definitely a club for the future. We won’t go 0-33,” he insisted.

Dusha is definitely a player for the future and will look to make an immediate impact when Surrey take on Worcester Wolves in their BBL opener at Surrey Sports Park.
