Scotland Senior Men’s team got a clean sweep over England Select this weekend at the International Summer Slam at Meadowbank Arena, Edinburgh.
Jonny Bunyan (pictured above), one of the GB U20s’ cuts last summer, had impressive outings in both games, with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists on Saturday in an 83-59 rout, and another 17 points on Sunday to lead all scorers in a closer 74-66 victory.
Meanwhile, Scotland and GB rising star Ali Fraser, who has revealed he will forgo his senior season at Maine to go pro, had 24 points on opening day, and then a 12 point, 10 rebound double double on Sunday.
“We’ve never won a European title but with this group, I’ve been saying that’s a realistic aim next year,” said Scotland’s head coach Iain Maclean, as they look towards the 2014 Euro C/Small Nations Championships. “We’ve got a good nucleus. We’ve had good results against Luxembourg and now England. A few guys have shown they’ve got the desire and belief. And if we stay together and stay focused, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be aiming high.”
Scotland also feature GB’s Kieron Achara, who has been instrumental in their success this summer, with 11 and 9 boards on Saturday and 14 points and 10 rebounds on Sunday.
England were led by 27 points on 10/15 shooting from Orlan Jackman on Saturday, but had little help as he was the only player to reach double figures. Jackman followed it up with 10 points and 12 rebounds on Sunday, but struggled from the floor as he went 3/14. Jamell Anderson had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals to lead England in Game 2.
