BUTLER IN, PAGE OUT FOR EUROBASKET
Great Britain’s women have received a massive boost ahead of the start of their pre-EuroBasket training camp after Kim Butler declared her availability for this summer’s campaign.
The forward, one of the most popular figures in the squad, had originally signalled her intent to retire completely after last year’s Olympic Games and return to her home near Seattle.
However Butler made a mid-season comeback in the Latvian League and has now decided to answer the call from new coach Damian Jennings to prolong her international career.
“Bring on GB and the European Championships,†said Butler.
“I couldn’t turn my back on the future of GB hoops. This summer is far too important and I care so much about my team-mates and Damian’s first coaching experience.â€
The news has been welcomed by her prospective colleagues for the Europeans in France.
“It’s great to have her back,†said GB guard Stef Collins. “She’s been such a key player for us over the years and to have more continuity is a big plus for us.â€
Julie Page is staying retired
When training camp opens in Guildford in early-May, there will be one long-time GB servant missing.
Julie Page, who has spent this season with Sheffield Hatters, has confirmed that her international stint is over after playing an integral role under previous coach Tom Maher.
The Manchester-born forward is understood to have made her intent known last autumn to team officials and has not had a change of heart since.
Former Falkirk centre Mairi Buchan, who is expected to join Butler in the initial GB squad, is set to join EBL champions Cardiff Archers next season after completing her four-year stint at Old Dominion University in Virginia.
The Scottish centre has accepted a place at Cardiff Medical School.
