Reading Rockets won the 2012/13 VCars.co.uk Division 1 League title with five games to spare this weekend, as they beat Brixton 77-51 in Brixton on Sunday.
It marks the first time the Rockets have taken home the league title since the 2008/9 season, as they currently stand 20-1 on the season.
“I am absolutely delighted we have managed to win the league and I am so happy for the players,” said Rockets head coach Samit Nuruzade. “They have been fantastic this season and they deserve their success more than anyone. It is a great achievement for them, for me, and this club and we are all really thrilled that the hard work, dedication, and will to win has paid off up until this point.”
Nuruzade added that the team must not rest on their laurels as the season goes into its final stretch.
“To be crowned champions with five games still to go and only one loss to our name is an incredible achievement,” he continued. “But now it is vital that we maintain this form heading into the post season which I know will be extremely tough with everyone gunning for us and this league being as competitive as it has.”
Rockets Captain Ryan Lohfink, who is the only remaining player from the club’s last Division One honours, echoed his coach’s sentiments:
“It’s been tough with a number of personnel changes and having limited guys so I think that makes this title all the more special. I am delighted to have been able to lead this group of players and I want to continue to do so into the post season so it is vital we all stick to task as there is still a lot of basketball to be played between now and the end of the post season.”
The Rockets will be receiving their VCARS.co.uk Div 1 Champions trophy and medals prior to their next home game, against Hemel Storm, on Sunday (17th March).
